How to Find an A/C Expert

Find an A/C Expert: A Checklist

Your air conditioner is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make in your home. So if it develops a problem and needs service or maintenance, make sure you take the time to find the right A/C contractor for the job. Not every technician is a good one. Make sure you get the best service by learning what to look for in an A/C repair contractor.

Get a Written Estimate

Ideally, you should get written estimates for your job from 3 contractors. This will ensure that you understand the scope of the job and exactly what you’ll be paying for. Always look for a technician that will explain things and provide you with options.  For example, should you repair or replace your unit?

Are They Licensed and Insured?

Make sure the person you hire can provide you with proof of licensing and insurance that meet the state’s regulations.  You can check with the state licensing board too.

Check References

An easy and effective way to confirm your contractor has experience and is up to the task is to check on references from past customers. Check their Yelp and Google reviews and look for:

  • Was their quote accurate and the price fair?
  • How many 4 or 5 star reviews do you see?
  • Did they complete the job on time?
  • Are they repeat customers?

What About Training and Certifications?

One way to find an A/C expert is to ask about any training or certifications. This may include training with a particular brand or manufacturer of air conditioner, which can help ensure that the contractor knows yours.

Experience

Make sure that your contractor has experience with your particular system.

Get a Written Guarantee

What happens if something goes wrong on the job, or the repair doesn’t hold up the way you were promised it would? Look for a technician that will provide you a written guarantee for their work product. This could include warranties or a guarantee of workmanship.

Any contractor that refuses to back up his or her work should be avoided.  Contractors should be confident in their work, which means that they can fully guarantee their services.

Take the Time

When you find the right contractor for the job, you’ll be confident that your A/C unit is taken care of.  It might be tempting to go with the first person that answers the phone but take the time to vet your contractor thoroughly. It can make all the difference!
